Amanda's Journey

"I was never going to own the family asphalt business."
I started working in my family's asphalt business when I was 13. I worked in the office helping with paperwork, then graduated to answering phones, paying bills and invoicing customers. By the age of 15, I was running payroll and filling out the general ledger.

I worked in the office every summer until I graduated college in 1997. After all those years working for my dad, after seeing how hard he had to work and how stressful it was owning your own business, I had decided that I was never going to own the family asphalt business.

"...It's gonna be the crazy I already know."
After graduating with a dual degree in Finance and Asian Studies, I worked briefly in insurance, then went to work at a nonprofit agency. After a few years and a few promotions, I was bored and out of challenges, so I decided to go back to college and get my MBA in Finance.

For my MBA internship, I worked in the finance department for a large manufacturer in Chicago - it was my first experience with the corporate world and I hated it. I decided that if I'm going to work with crazy people, it's gonna be the crazy I already know.

"Dad, I'm going to buy you out."
So I called up my dad and said "Dad, I'm going to buy you out." I worked with my professors to develop a comprehensive buyout offer and presented it to my dad in January 2003. When I graduated with my MBA that June, I was part-owner of Hayhoe Asphalt.

I worked for two years side-by-side with my dad and our crew, learning how to do the physical part of our work. I was nowhere near the caliber of any of our employees, but I learned first-hand what it took to run a job site and do hard, physical labor on top of 350 degree asphalt.

"I've survived a recession, company expansion, hiring crisis..."

"I'm going to change the lives of women business owners."
Fast-forward 20 years and I'm now the sole owner of Hayhoe Asphalt. I've survived a recession, a company expansion with rapid growth, a skilled trades hiring crisis, a division closure, a wordwide pandemic and a significant company restructuring.

I've laid awake at night worrying about customers and cash flow and employees. I've had the pleasure of working alongside some of the most skilled and loyal people I've ever met. I've won awards related to my business, my leadership and my philanthropy. And I've founded three more companies.
I'm passionate about supporting all woman-owned business, and am especially excited to work with women who own construction companies. There's a lot of bullsh!t sexism in the construction industry, and I'm proud to help women navigate the potential minefields while still focusing on strengthening their business.

My specialty is small-business finance and I love helping women owners gain a deeper understanding of what their company's financial numbers actually mean and how to achieve greater profitability.
